How to Calculate Your Final Grade

Your final course grade is a weighted combination of your work so far and your final exam score. Here is the formula and how to apply it.

The formula

Most courses calculate your final grade by weighting your current standing against your final exam score:

Final grade = current grade × (1 − final weight) + exam score × final weight

The final weight is the decimal form of the percentage listed in your syllabus. If the final is worth 30%, use 0.30.

Step-by-step example

Suppose your current grade is 82%, the final exam is worth 30%, and you score 90% on the exam.

  • Current work counts for 70%: 82 × 0.70 = 57.4
  • Final exam counts for 30%: 90 × 0.30 = 27.0
  • Final grade: 57.4 + 27.0 = 84.4%

The strong exam performance moved the overall grade from 82% to 84.4%.

What the formula assumes

This formula treats everything before the final as one weighted block and the final exam as another. It matches how most instructors structure weighted syllabus grading. If your class runs on a simple total-points system, your instructor adds all earned points across the entire semester and divides by total possible points — no separate formula needed.

Finding the required exam score

If you already know your target grade, you can rearrange the formula to find the minimum score you need on the final:

Required score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) / final weight

FAQ

What if my final exam is worth 50% or more?

The formula works the same way regardless of the weight. A heavier final exam simply means the exam has more power to raise or lower your grade. Use the Final Grade Calculator to see exactly how your current grade and exam score interact at any weight.

What if my class uses total points instead of percentages?

Convert to percentages first. Divide your total earned points by total possible points for all non-final work to get your current grade percentage. Do the same for the final exam value.

Can a strong final exam raise my grade by a full letter?

Yes, if the final counts for a large portion. For example, a 40% final can move your grade by up to 40 percentage points in either direction depending on the exam score.

What if the syllabus splits grades into categories like tests, homework, and projects?

That is a weighted category system. Your current grade already reflects those category weights. The formula above applies to the overall grade you have now versus the final exam weight listed on the syllabus.

Results are estimates based on the formula above. Your official grade is determined by your instructor and may differ due to rounding, curves, extra credit, or grading policies not covered here.
