Grade Calculator
Enter points earned and points possible to estimate your current points-based class grade.
Calculate your points-based grade
Add assignments, quizzes, tests, or projects that use earned and possible points.
How to calculate your class grade
- 1. Add each assignment — Enter its name (optional), how many points you earned, and how many points were possible.
- 2. Add more assignments — Click "Add assignment" for every graded item: homework, quizzes, tests, labs, and projects.
- 3. Calculate — Your overall class grade appears as a percentage. Use the letter grade table below to see where it lands.
This calculator uses a points-based method — all earned points are added together and divided by all possible points. If your syllabus uses category weights instead, use the Weighted Grade Calculator.
Formula
Grade = total earned points / total possible points x 100
Example: 45/50, 18/20, and 88/100 gives 151 earned points out of 170 possible points, or 88.8%.
Examples
Example 1 — Standard assignment mix
Homework 1 (45/50) · Quiz 1 (18/20) · Midterm (87/100) · Homework 2 (48/50)
Earned: 45 + 18 + 87 + 48 = 198 · Possible: 50 + 20 + 100 + 50 = 220
Grade: 198 ÷ 220 = 90.0%
Example 2 — Low quiz score, strong final
Quiz (12/25) · Midterm (78/100) · Final (185/200)
Earned: 12 + 78 + 185 = 275 · Possible: 25 + 100 + 200 = 325
Grade: 275 ÷ 325 = 84.6%

Most US schools use this standard scale. Always check your syllabus — some instructors set different cutoffs.
FAQ
What is a points-based grade?
A points-based grade divides total points earned by total points possible across all assignments entered. Each assignment contributes proportionally based on its point value, so a 100-point test has more impact than a 10-point quiz.
When should I use the weighted grade calculator instead?
Use the Weighted Grade Calculator when your syllabus defines categories like Homework 30%, Tests 50%, Final 20%. Use this calculator when each assignment simply has its own point value and everything is added together.
Can extra credit be entered?
Yes. Enter extra credit as earned points above the possible points for that assignment. However, your official class rules may handle extra credit differently — some instructors add it after the final calculation.
How do large assignments affect my grade?
In a points-based system, higher-point assignments carry more weight automatically. A 200-point final exam counts for twice as much as a 100-point midterm. If you want to see the impact of a specific assignment, try changing its earned points and recalculating.
What if an assignment has not been graded yet?
Leave it out for now to see your current grade on completed work only. Or enter a projected score to estimate where you might end up by the end of the semester.
How do I convert my points grade to a letter grade?
Most instructors use a standard scale: 90-100% = A, 80-89% = B, 70-79% = C, 60-69% = D, below 60% = F. Check your syllabus for your instructor's exact scale.
