What Grade Do I Need on My Final?

The score you need on your final exam depends on three things: your current grade, your target course grade, and how much the final is worth.

The formula

Rearrange the final grade formula to solve for the required exam score:

Required score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) / final weight

The final weight is a decimal. If the final exam counts for 25% of your grade, the final weight is 0.25.

Example: aiming for a B

You have a 74% in the class. You want to finish with at least an 80% (a B). Your final exam is worth 30%.

  • Target: 80
  • Current grade contribution: 74 × (1 − 0.30) = 74 × 0.70 = 51.8
  • Gap to cover: 80 − 51.8 = 28.2
  • Required exam score: 28.2 / 0.30 = 94%

You need a 94% on the final to finish with an 80% in the course.

Example: protecting an A

You have a 95% in the class and want to keep an A (90% or above). Your final is worth 40%.

  • Target: 90
  • Current grade contribution: 95 × 0.60 = 57
  • Gap: 90 − 57 = 33
  • Required exam score: 33 / 0.40 = 82.5%

Even with a 40% final, you only need an 82.5% on the exam to keep your A. Your strong current grade gives you a cushion.

How final weight affects your situation

The higher the final exam weight, the more the exam can change your grade — for better or worse. If your current grade is well above your target, a heavy final means you could still lose significant ground. If your current grade is below your target, a heavy final is your best opportunity to recover.

FAQ

What if my required score comes out above 100%?

If the math produces a required score above 100%, the target grade is not reachable through the final exam alone given your current standing. You may need to speak with your instructor about extra credit or grade recovery options.

What if my required score is below 0%?

A negative required score means you have already locked in your target grade regardless of the final exam. You would pass even with a zero on the final, though that outcome is rarely advisable.

Does a heavier final exam weight make it easier or harder to reach my target?

A heavier final weight gives the exam more power to move your grade in either direction. If your current grade is below your target, a higher final weight actually helps because one strong exam performance can close the gap faster.

My instructor said they drop the lowest test. Does that change this calculation?

Yes. Your current grade should already reflect the dropped score if your instructor has applied it. Use the grade you see in the gradebook as your starting point, not the raw average.

Results are estimates. Your official course grade is determined by your instructor and may differ due to rounding, curves, extra credit, or other grading policies.
