High School GPA Calculator
Enter your courses, letter grades, and course levels to estimate your weighted and unweighted GPA.
Calculate your high school GPA
This calculator uses common weighting: AP/IB adds 1.0 and honors adds 0.5 to the base grade points. Weighted GPA is capped at 5.0.
Formula
Weighted GPA = sum of (grade points + level bonus) / number of courses
Each letter grade converts to grade points on the standard 4.0 scale. AP and IB courses add 1.0; honors courses add 0.5. The weighted grade point is capped at 5.0. Unweighted GPA uses the base grade points with no bonus.
Examples
Example 1 — Weighted GPA with AP courses
English (Regular, A) · AP Calculus (AP, B+) · AP History (AP, A) · Honors Spanish (Honors, A−)
Unweighted points: 4.0 + 3.3 + 4.0 + 3.7 = 15.0 ÷ 4 = 3.75 UW
Weighted points: 4.0 + (3.3+1.0) + (4.0+1.0) + (3.7+0.5) = 17.5 ÷ 4 = 4.38 W
Example 2 — All regular courses
Math (Regular, A) · Science (Regular, B+) · English (Regular, A−) · History (Regular, B)
Unweighted: (4.0 + 3.3 + 3.7 + 3.0) ÷ 4 = 3.50 UW (weighted = same, no bonus courses)
FAQ
What is a weighted GPA?
A weighted GPA gives extra grade points for harder courses. AP and IB classes typically add 1.0 to the base grade points, and honors classes add 0.5. This allows GPAs above 4.0.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA treats all courses equally on a 4.0 scale regardless of difficulty. Weighted GPA gives bonus points for AP, IB, and honors courses, so it can exceed 4.0. Colleges typically recalculate GPA using their own method.
Does every high school use the same weighting?
No. Weighting rules vary by school and district. This calculator uses common assumptions: AP/IB adds 1.0 and honors adds 0.5. Check with your school counselor for the exact policy your school uses.
Are credits used in high school GPA?
Most high school GPA calculations treat all courses equally without credit weighting. This calculator averages grade points across all courses entered.
What GPA do I need to get into college?
It depends on the school. Highly selective colleges typically admit students with a 3.7 unweighted GPA or higher. State universities and less selective schools often accept students with GPAs of 3.0 to 3.5. Colleges recalculate your GPA using their own scale, so your reported GPA is a starting point, not the final word.
How do AP and IB classes affect my class rank?
If your school uses weighted GPA for class rank, taking AP or IB courses can raise your rank even if you earn a B, because the weighted bonus keeps your point value competitive. Taking regular courses and earning all As may put you at a disadvantage in weighted class rank systems.
