How AP and Honors Classes Affect GPA

AP and honors courses can boost your weighted GPA with bonus grade points, but the benefit depends on the grade you earn.

How the bonus works

In a weighted GPA system, the grade point value of each letter grade is increased for advanced courses before being averaged across all courses. The most common convention:

  • AP and IB courses: +1.0 added to the base grade point value
  • Honors courses: +0.5 added to the base grade point value
  • Regular courses: no bonus

The weighted grade point is typically capped at 5.0, so an A in an AP course earns 5.0 — not 5.0 or more — regardless of any additional bonus.

B+3.33.84.3
B3.03.54.0

The break-even point

A B in an AP course (4.0 weighted) equals an A in a regular course (4.0 unweighted). This means an AP course becomes a net neutral compared to a regular course if you earn a B, and it hurts your weighted GPA if you earn a B− or below relative to earning an A in a regular course.

This does not mean avoiding AP is the right choice — course rigor matters for college admissions beyond the GPA number. But it is a useful frame for deciding how many advanced courses to take at once.

Example: one semester with a mix of courses

Four courses: Regular English (A), AP Chemistry (B), Honors Math (A−), Regular PE (A).

  • English A regular: 4.0 weighted, 4.0 unweighted
  • AP Chemistry B: 4.0 weighted, 3.0 unweighted
  • Honors Math A−: 4.2 weighted, 3.7 unweighted
  • PE A regular: 4.0 weighted, 4.0 unweighted
  • Weighted GPA: (4.0 + 4.0 + 4.2 + 4.0) / 4 = 4.05
  • Unweighted GPA: (4.0 + 3.0 + 3.7 + 4.0) / 4 = 3.68

FAQ

Is taking an AP class always worth it for GPA?

Not automatically. If you earn a C in an AP course, the weighted bonus may not outweigh the grade hit. A C in AP earns 3.0 weighted, which is the same as a B in a regular course. Balance the difficulty of the course against a realistic grade expectation.

Do AP exam scores affect GPA?

AP exam scores (1–5) are separate from your school grade and do not directly affect your GPA. They may affect college credit, but your grade in the AP course — not the exam score — is what goes on your transcript.

How do IB courses compare to AP for GPA weighting?

Most schools that weight IB courses treat them the same as AP, adding 1.0 to the base grade point value. Some schools use different rules. Check your school's policy for the exact treatment of IB courses.

Does dual enrollment affect high school GPA?

It depends on your school and state. Some schools weight dual enrollment courses the same as AP; others treat them as regular courses; still others exclude them from the high school GPA entirely. Confirm with your guidance counselor.

Weighting conventions vary by school. AP exam scores do not directly affect high school GPA. Confirm your school’s exact weighting rules with your counselor or registrar.
